Grand Rapids Children’s Museum opening Diagnosis: FUN!

(GRAND RAPIDS, MI) April 10, 2017-The Grand Rapids Children’s Museum welcomes its newest exhibit, Diagnosis: FUN!, presented in partnership with Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.  Opening April 25th, the exhibit gives children the opportunity to explore the world of healthcare including tools, equipment, and machines that are used at the hospital or at their doctor’s office.

Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital helped create a realistic hospital environment to introduce children to what they might encounter including a nurses’ station, radiology imaging equipment, anesthesia machines, real hospital beds, and more.  The exhibit will show kids how these tools work and also make their first visit to the hospital less scary.  There is also a learning component to the exhibit that could spark an interest in kids for a future career in healthcare.  “We want our exhibits to be as close to the real thing as we can safely be,” explains Jake Bouck, Director of Exhibits & Events at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum.

“Purposeful play that helps kids be more comfortable with healthcare is a big benefit.  First, we need these kids to become our future nurses and doctors.  Second, the more familiar children are with healthcare, the more comfortable they will be should they need the doctors and staff of Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital,” said Steve Heacock, senior vice president for public affairs and research at Spectrum Health.

To celebrate the opening of the new exhibit, GRCM will be hosting a Community Health Resource Fair on Thursday, April 27th, 5:00pm-8:00pm during Thursday Night Family Night.  This event offers a chance for families to meet health professionals from around the Grand Rapids area and learn more about resources available.

Diagnosis: FUN! opens April 25 and runs through August 27, 2017.
