Spectrum Health Ranked Third in Michigan By U.S. News & World Report

Report Also Nationally Ranks Three Programs Among Nation’s Best

Spectrum Health has been ranked third in Michigan by U.S. News & World Report in its Best Hospitals 2013-14 rankings. It was among the best hospitals in the nation in three medical specialties and was recognized as high-performing in nine medical specialties.

Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital and Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital were ranked third in Michigan behind University of Michigan Hospital and Beaumont Hospital. They placed 20th in gynecology; 25th in diabetes and endocrinology and 40th in pulmonology in the national rankings. This is the first year the hospitals were nationally ranked in pumonology.

The hospitals also were recognized as high-performing in cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; ears, nose and throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics and urology.

The Best Hospitals 2013-14 rankings are the 24th annual edition, which evaluated approximately 5,000 hospitals. Only 147 were nationally ranked in at least one of 16 medical specialties.

“We are honored to be ranked among the best hospitals in the country and have so many specialties considered high-performing,” said Matt Van Vranken, executive vice president, Spectrum Health Delivery System. “It is a tremendous reflection on our physicians and employees and underscores our commitment to providing value and quality to the people of West Michigan.”

“A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. “Only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region’s best. Just three percent of all hospitals earn a national ranking in any specialty.”

The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. The complete rankings and methodology are available at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals.
