Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital Hosts First Medication and Needle Take-Back Event

ZEELAND, Mich., April 27, 2017 – Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital had overwhelming response to the hospital’s first medication and needle take-back event. The April 21 event collected over 310 bottles of medication, including many controlled substances such as potent pain medications. The bottles contained over 48 pounds of medication. In addition to the medication, 37 pounds of needle waste was collected.

“Proper disposal of medications and needles is important for our health and the environment,” said Joel West, pharmacist, Zeeland Community Hospital. “Safe disposal prevents them from going into landfills or potentially polluting our water supply.”

The hospital partnered with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department to host the event.

“We were pleased with the great turnout for the first event,” Ryan Huizenga, officer, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. “We look forward to continuing to offer this service to the community.”
