Bariatric Surgery Now Available in Greenville

Corewell Health expands surgical service to the community.

Joshua Smith, MD

GREENVILLE, Mich., January 30, 2023 – For those struggling with obesity, minimally invasive bariatric surgery can be a big step toward better health and higher quality of life.

For people in the Montcalm County area, bariatric surgery is now available close to home as Corewell Health™, formerly Spectrum Health, Greenville Hospital has started offering surgeries locally.

“We’re so happy to now offer this to our patients close to home,” said Andrea Leslie, president of Corewell Health Greenville, Kelsey, Big Rapids and Reed City Hospitals. “We know convenient access to all types of care is critical, and introducing this service here will make it so much easier for those desiring to make a positive change in their lifestyle.”

Joshua Smith, MD, performed his first procedures in Greenville on January 24 and will see patients for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric bypass and hernia repair with the sleeve and bypass. He will perform surgeries one day each month.

In June, James Foote, MD, will join Dr. Smith in serving local patients and he will also provide surgeries monthly.

Those interested in pursuing bariatric surgery will begin their journey with a one-on-one consultation and will be assisted by a team that includes your surgeon, nurse, dietitian, behaviorist and other professionals as needed.

“It’s not a quick process,” Leslie said. “There’s a lot of preparation leading up to the procedure and not everyone qualifies, but for some patients, the results can be truly life changing.”

Weight loss surgery can help improve type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
