Quality Transformation Elevated at Spectrum Health

Spectrum Health is heightening its efforts to ensure quality and safety for all of its patients.

“Patients are at the heart of all that we do,” said James M. Tucci, MD, MMM, chief clinical systems integration and improvement officer, Spectrum Health System. “Spectrum Health has always had a culture that emphasized quality and safety. That is why we are making a major investment in people, resources and planning so that we continue to provide quality-focused care in all of our hospitals and offices.”

A key leadership position has been elevated to help oversee quality efforts throughout the system.

“In order to serve our patients, the previous roles of director of quality for Spectrum Health Medical Group and the vice president of quality for Spectrum Health Hospital Group have been elevated to have systemwide responsibility,” explained J. Michael Kramer, MD, MBA, senior vice president and chief quality officer.

Matthew J. Schreiber, MD, has been named vice president, hospital quality and system patient safety.

“We are very pleased to have Dr. Schreiber on board to help us as we continue to embed quality and safety into all of the work we do,” added Kramer. “He is a nationally recognized physician leader who has successfully enhanced quality efforts in other health care systems.”

Dr. Schreiber will be responsible for quality in all of Spectrum Health’s hospitals and safety throughout the system, including the ambulatory practices. He was most recently lead consultant for the American Hospital Association team responsible for the Hospital Engagement Network strategy to reduce hospital readmissions. At Piedmont Healthcare, an integrated health system in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Schreiber began as a hospitalist and was eventually promoted to chief medical officer and, later, corporate vice president of patient safety.

Dr. Schreiber completed the American Hospital Association’s National Patient Safety Foundation Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and his medical degree from New York State Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel. Dr. Schreiber completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of California in San Diego.
