Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital received an “A” grade for patient safety in the new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, just announced by The Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watchdog organization. The “A” ranking places the Ludington hospital among the safest hospitals in the United States and repeats the group’s highest ranking, which the hospital also received in the fall of 2016.

“It’s very gratifying not only that our physicians and clinical staff are recognized for their dedication to patient safety and quality by a respected national organization, but also for that exemplary rating to be repeated,” said Ludington internist Mary O’Callaghan, DO, division chief for Spectrum Health Medical Group in the northwest region.

Developed under the guidance of an expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital is one of 823 hospitals nationwide to receive Leapfrog’s highest rating for patient safety.

Randy Kelley, president of Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital said, “I congratulate all concerned for this achievement. It reflects the fine performance of our medical and clinical staff, and underscores their commitment to sustained excellence in patient outcomes.”

Added Helen Johnson, the hospital’s chief nursing officer, “It is particularly encouraging to see our staff repeat this outstanding achievement. Providing excellent care, one patient at a time, brings about the reliability of repeated high performance shown in this ‘A’ rating.”

“Hospitals that earn top marks nationally in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, have achieved the highest safety standards in the country,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “That takes commitment from every member of the hospital staff, who all deserve thanks and congratulations when their hospitals achieve an ‘A’ Safety Grade.”
