Compassionate care honored with DAISY and BEE Awards
Spectrum Health United Hospital ICU, inpatient staffs also recognized.
GREENVILLE, Mich., March 24, 2021 – Spectrum Health United Hospital leadership honored staff members in its ICU and inpatient departments Tuesday with a DAISY Team Award for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Carol Dwyer, chief nursing officer of Spectrum Health United and Kelsey Hospitals, nominated the departments for the special recognition.
“This interdisciplinary team is being recognized for their strong sense of collegiality, respect, and clinical performance,” the nomination read. “Together they have achieved positive results because of their trust in one another, resourcefulness in seeking each one’s expertise, and their own expectation of excellence. Not only do they care for our patients, but they care for each other. The team took on clinically challenging situations like none of them had seen or managed before requiring significant time-management skills and reliance on each other more than ever to do their part in caring for the sickest patients they’ve ever been assigned in their careers – that reliance spilled over into our entire clinical staff.”
Andrea Leslie, president of Spectrum Health United, Kelsey, Big Rapids and Reed City hospitals, along with Dwyer, presented ICU and inpatient nurse manager Royal Norgan with the team award.
ICU nurse Angela Griffin was honored with the Winter 2021 DAISY Award for her care of a COVID-19 patient last fall. She was recognized for nursing excellence after being nominated by a patient’s family member.
“My mom was admitted to the ICU with COVID-19 and Angie was her nurse many times during her 3-week stay,” the nomination read. “Angie went above and beyond to make my mom feel safe, comfortable and cared for when family couldn’t be there. I was able to get detailed updates via phone and she never made me feel like I was bothering her, considering I know how busy she was. Although my mom never got to come home from the hospital, I take comfort in knowing she was treated like family by the staff at United.”
Griffin was moved to tears in hearing the nomination and receiving the award.
Joining Griffin in receiving accolades Tuesday was Colleen Castro, a United Hospital nurse technician who was honored with a BEE Award.
Norgan nominated Castro for the recognition saying she is a stellar employee who is kind and generous with her time and attention to patients.
Griffin and Castro received pins, flowers and certificates at the quarterly DAISY and BEE Award ceremony to recognize excellent performance.
The awards are given based on nominations from patients, community members and colleagues.
The award program was adopted from The DAISY Award, an international program established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes family was deeply appreciative of the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created an award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.
United and Kelsey Hospitals have expanded the recognition program to include the BEE award, open to all clinical and non-clinical employees, in addition to nurses.
Nominations are open for any Spectrum Health employee who regularly goes above and beyond in creating a meaningful experience for patients.
Nomination forms can be found at any Spectrum Health facility or submitted online at: https://www.onlineregistrationcenter.com/UHKHDaisyAwards
