Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital Offers Another Level of Care with Midwifery Services
ZEELAND, Mich., March 28, 2022 – The Spectrum Health Medical Group OB-GYN team on the lakeshore has expanded to include midwifery services. Katie Steele, RN, CNM, has joined the team as the certified nurse midwife for Spectrum Health patients in the southwest region. Steele has served as a registered nurse at Zeeland Community Hospital for 20 years, with 15 of those years spent working in the Family Birth Center, prior to obtaining her nurse midwife certification from Frontier Nursing University. She is certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board and is licensed in the State of Michigan.
“The most rewarding aspect of being a maternity nurse was being able to develop lasting relationships with the patients and being such an instrumental part of their delivery experience,” said Steele. “Establishing those connections is what made me decide to continue my training to become a midwife. I look forward to providing care for all areas of women’s wellness, including annual well-woman exams, pregnancy care, menopause, preventative screenings, sexual health and fertility.”
Spectrum Health’s CNMs work in collaboration with our physicians, allowing for coordinated care and seamless referrals to specialists, if needed. As part of the Spectrum Health System, Zeeland Community Hospital is now part of the only hospital-based midwifery program in West Michigan, giving patients the personalized care they desire, with the peace of mind that comes from having expert resources there if you need them, including the Fetal Care Center, maternal fetal medicine specialists and Michigan’s largest Level IV NICU at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.
“Certified nurse midwives offer a safe, high-quality alternative approach to health care for women,” said Thomas Fasbender, DO, OB-GYN service chief, Spectrum Health Medical Group. “Spectrum Health’s collaborative model of care—certified nurse midwives working in partnership with OB-GYN physicians—makes possible the best health outcomes for moms and babies.”
