Zeeland Community Hospital receives top quality ranking from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
July 27, 2023
Zeeland, Mich., July 27, 2023 – Zeeland Community Hospital, part of Corewell Health, again has received a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for strong performance in key quality measures including readmission rates and safety of care. This is the fifth time the hospital has received the top spot.
“When I came to Zeeland Hospital two years ago, my first impression was this team is incredibly skilled, endlessly compassionate and remarkably hardworking,” said Bill Hoefer, president of Zeeland Community Hospital. “At that time, I knew we would get exceptional results, and it is our team members who are the ones who made this five-star rating possible.”
More than 4,650 hospitals across the country for 2023 were rated by CMS using a seven-step process, which ultimately aims to arm patients with information about how hospitals are performing when seeking care. Zeeland Hospital was one of only 483 hospitals to receive a five-star rating.
CMS uses more than 45 measures that are based on five categories including mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience as well as timely and effective care. Zeeland has shown continuous improvement, particularly in lowering readmission rates and by an on-going provision of safe, timely and effective care.
“During our daily check-ins along with our quality and patient satisfaction meetings, our team members critically discuss topics such as how to improve processes and safety that will help us achieve better outcomes,” Hoefer said. “This diligent focus and commitment to measuring results have allowed on-going and steady improvements and as Peter Drucker, a famous management theorist once said, ‘What gets measured, gets improved.’ At Zeeland Hospital we have found this to be true.”
Implementing more detailed documentation measures was also key, especially for patients with complex needs, which led to even better care and outcomes.
“Providing compassionate and exceptionally high quality and safe care to our patients and their families is our number one priority,” Hoefer said. “Our five-star rating shows that our efforts are having the impact we want, and we cherish the opportunity to serve our community.”
Additional Corewell Health hospitals receiving a five-star rating include Blodgett and Butterworth Hospitals in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Gerber in Fremont, Michigan, which received five stars for the second time in a row.
