Local Salon Gives to Cancer Program
Despite the turbulent economic times for many companies, one Reed City business gave a percentage of their proceeds to charity. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness in October, Cuttin’ Loose Hair Salon and Day Spa offered a ten percent discount to their customers while donating another ten percent of their proceeds to the cancer services fund at Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital. Cricket-Marie Patteen, salon manager, presented a check for $602 to Irene Balowski, director of cancer services.
“We are so grateful that Cuttin’ Loose has joined the fight against cancer,” says Christie Carlson, fund development coordinator. “This fund is designed to help Reed City’s cancer program offer advanced testing and treatments so patients and families do not have to travel far for screenings, diagnostics, chemotherapy or radiation therapy.”
For staff at Cuttin’ Loose, the fight against cancer hits close to home. Many of the stylists have been touched by cancer in some way, through their family or friends. Receptionist Maxine Curnett has been a colon cancer survivor for two years.
“Our staff is just like family,” says Patteen. “So together, we decided to help a local charity while promoting breast cancer awareness and wearing pink t-shirts every Friday. We ordered a special survivor shirt just for Maxine.”
Patteen says that business increased in October, and attributes the rise to the media coverage for the event and partnership with the hospital. She adds, “Many people came out to pamper themselves and support a great cause at the same time.”
