Spectrum Health Employees Honor MLK’s Legacy Through Community Service

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., January 13, 2017 – Spectrum Health is observing the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday by offering its employees several volunteer opportunities across West Michigan on Monday, January 16, and throughout the week.

Nearly 500 Spectrum Health employees have committed to volunteering at locations throughout the health system’s service area in Big Rapids, Fremont, Grand Rapids, Greenville, Hastings, Holland, Lakeview, Ludington, Reed City and Southfield.

“We are proud to have so many employees participate in this important day of service across West Michigan to honor the significant contributions and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Jennifer Jackson, director, employee lifecycle, inclusion and diversity, Spectrum Health. “On this day each year we have an opportunity to come together as a community and be reminded that we all can make a positive impact.”

Activities in Grand Rapids include, among others, assisting in the preparation and serving of a noon meal to Heartside residents at God’s Kitchen, preparing and packaging sack suppers for area children and schools at Kids Food Basket, assisting program club members, playing games and helping kids with homework at the Boys & Girls Clubs.

Dr. King devoted his life’s work to causes of equality and social justice. He taught that through nonviolence and service to one another, problems such as hunger, homelessness, prejudice and discrimination can be overcome. Dr. King’s teachings and call to serving others continue to guide many in addressing our nation’s most pressing needs – poverty, economic insecurity, job loss and education.
