Spectrum Health Board Elects Two New Members
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Dec. 6, 2017 – Spectrum Health System Board of Directors has elected two new members to serve on its system board. Mehmood Khan, MD and Gloria Lara will serve three-year terms.
The system board provides oversight and strategic direction to the health system which includes Spectrum Health Hospital Group, Spectrum Health Medical Group and Priority Health.
Khan is vice chairman and chief scientific officer of PepsiCo’s global research and development efforts. He has held a number of executive positions with the company since 2007. In his current role, he oversees PepsiCo’s global Performance with Purpose sustainability initiatives as well as R&D.
Prior to PepsiCo, he was President, Takeda Global Research & Development Center for Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Khan also has held clinical positions with the Mayo Clinic, Hennepin County Medical Center and the University of Minnesota in the areas of endocrinology, diabetes and nutrition.
He received his medical training from the University of Liverpool Medical School, England and postgraduate training in the areas of food science and nutrition at the University of Minnesota. He also is a fellow in the American College of Endocrinology.
Khan also serves on a number of national committees, currently serving as vice chairman for industry, on the U.S. Council for Competitiveness, and as chairman, on the U.S.-Pakistan Business Council of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Lara has served as the CEO of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce since 2016. She is responsible for representing the interests of the state’s nearly 20,000 Hispanic-owned businesses and management of day-to-day Hispanic Chamber operations.
She has experience in finance, marketing, sales and project management in executive-level positions at IBM, Jervis B. Webb Company, Delphi Corporation, UT Automotive, TRW and Chrysler Corporation. Prior to her position with the Hispanic Chamber, she served as CEO of Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Prior to being elected to the system board, Lara was a trustee on the Spectrum Health Hospital Group board, serving as chair of the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Committee. In addition, she is a member of the Board of Directors of Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, and served as a board member for the Economic Club of Grand Rapids.
Lara earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting from California State University, Fullerton and a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School.
