Two Spectrum Health Hospitals Receive America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™ for 4th Year in a Row
Blodgett Hospital and Butterworth Hospital Among Top One Percent of Hospitals in Nation
Grand Rapids, MI— February 27, 2018 – Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital and Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital have received the Healthgrades 2018 America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™ for a fourth consecutive year (2015-2018).
The distinction places these hospitals in the top one percent of more than 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide, for consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, a leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.
“Being ranked among the top one percent in the nation is an honor. It is a great reflection of the people who provide exceptional care at Spectrum Health,” said Tina Freese Decker, executive vice president, chief operating officer, Spectrum Health. “This recognition validates the excellent outcomes and care provided by our caregivers. It translates to better care and value for our West Michigan communities.”
From 2014 through 2016, patients treated in hospitals achieving Healthgrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™ had, on average, a 26.2 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive this award, as measured across 19 rated conditions and procedures where mortality is the outcome.*
“We commend the recipients of the America’s 50 Best Hospital Award™ for delivering exceptional clinical outcomes to their patients,” said Brad Bowman MD, chief medical officer, Healthgrades. “The Healthgrades analysis shows that there is significant variation in care delivered, so it’s important for consumers to use information like this to research and select a hospital that will provide high-quality care.”
During this same period, if all other hospitals, as a group, had performed at the level of America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™ recipients across these 19 procedures and conditions, 179,464 lives could potentially have been saved.* For example, patients treated at a hospital that has achieved the America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™ had, on average, a 10.9 percent lower risk of dying during their hospital stay for a heart attack than if treated at a hospital that did not receive the award.*
The 50 recipients of the America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™ stand out for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2018 study period (2014-2016), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures — as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
