Spectrum Health Hospitals Earn America Best Hospital Rankings and 5-Star Ratings

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich,. Oct. 23, 2018 – Several hospitals in the Spectrum Health system have received recognition for clinical excellence. Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital and Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital were among America’s 100 Best Hospitals for numerous service lines according to a national study by Healthgrades.

Spectrum Health Butterworth and Blodgett hospitals were named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care for a seventh consecutive year (2013-2019), America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care, General Surgery and Gastrointestinal Care for a sixth year in a row (2014-2019).  Spectrum Butterworth and Blodgett hospitals were also named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery and America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement in 2019.

In addition, Spectrum Big Rapids Hospital received 5-star ratings for pneumonia, sepsis and respiratory failure outcomes; Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Hospital and Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital were 5-star rated for sepsis outcomes; Spectrum Health United Hospital earned 5-star ratings for sepsis and respiratory failure outcomes; and Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital was 5-star rated for treatment of heart failure and sepsis as well as total knee and total hip replacement. Spectrum Health Butterworth and Blodgett hospitals also earned numerous 5-star and top five percent ratings.

The achievement is part of findings released today in the Healthgrades 2019 Report to the Nation. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance differs dramatically between hospitals nationally, regionally and at the local level, and the impact that this variation has on health outcomes. Additionally, from 2015 through 2017, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement Award have, on average, a 63 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*

Patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention Award have, on average, a 46 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for almost 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
