Spectrum Health Prepares to Open Additional Hospital Beds Inside Renucci Hospitality House

Partners with Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan to Accommodate Families

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., April 2, 2020 – As part of Spectrum Health’s contingency planning to prepare for an expected surge in COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks, the Spectrum Health Renucci Hospitality House and the Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan collaborated on a plan to free up space at Spectrum Health Medical Center.

Under the arrangement, families staying at the Renucci House were asked to move Saturday to the Ronald McDonald House, and the families at the Ronald McDonald House moved to a nearby hotel. Spectrum Health is focused on ensuring evidence-based safety precautions to protect these families and their loved ones.

Spectrum Health is incredibly grateful for its long-standing partnership with Ronald McDonald House. The Renucci House and the Ronald McDonald House share a common goal of taking care of families and doing their best to help them manage the many challenges of caring for seriously ill loved ones. This plan allows both facilities to continue providing valuable support in a compassionate healing environment during this unprecedented public health crisis.

Spectrum Health has received emergency approval from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to repurpose its 37 beds at the Renucci House for inpatient hospice and end-of-life care and is now working with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for licensure of the beds. Spectrum Health is planning to accommodate appropriate visitation at this site for families to be able to share important final moments with their loved ones.

Both Renucci House and Ronald McDonald House are currently not accepting additional reservations for families, a decision made several weeks ago as COVID-19 cases emerged in West Michigan. They are continuing to evaluate the situation.
