BHSH System Transplant Survival Rates Best in State and Among Best in Nation
Grand Rapids, Mich., July 28, 2022 – BHSH System organ transplant survival rates are the best in the state of Michigan and for some organ transplants among the best in the nation according to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR).
At Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, adult lung transplant one-year patient survival is the best in the nation. Adult heart and lung and pediatric kidney transplant one-year survival outcomes are the best in Michigan.
At Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, the one year-survival outcomes for liver transplants are the best in the state. Kidney transplant survival rates are tied for the best in the state.
“When we launched BHSH System, our goal was to leverage our complementary strengths to innovate and provide exceptional care that improves health and inspires hope for our communities and their health,” said Darryl Elmouchi, MD, president, BHSH Spectrum Health West Michigan. “These transplant survival rates are yet another example of how effectively we are working to meet these goals and positively impact the health of patients throughout the entire state of Michigan.”
SRTR provides analyses related to solid organ transplantation in support of the Department of Health and Human Services and provides complex information to the transplant community and public in an understandable way.
Spectrum Health’s Richard DeVos Heart & Lung Transplant Program, founded in 2010, completed its first heart transplant in November, 2010, and its first lung transplant in February, 2013. Spectrum Health averages 43 lung transplants and 21 heart transplants per year.
Spectrum Health’s Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital offers the largest pediatric nephrology and kidney transplant program in West Michigan, providing a complete range of diagnosis and treatment for infants, children and adolescents with kidney and urinary tract disorders.
Beaumont Health this year is celebrating 50 years of transplant, providing innovative and collaborative approaches for the treatment of end-stage kidney disease and end-stage liver disease for patients from across the state. Beaumont’s Multi-Organ Transplant Center annually provides about 100 kidney transplants, a quarter of those through living donors, and about 30 liver transplants.
“Helping our patients achieve a life-changing transplant is a true team effort,” said Damanpreet Bedi, MD, section head of the Beaumont Multi-Organ Transplant Center. “From transplant coordinators and social workers to staff, physicians and surgeons at BHSH System, we are continually striving to provide the gift of life with the best outcomes possible. But many remain on the transplant list, so we are working to expand our program – and stress the importance of organ donation – to meet this incredible need in the community.”
