Center for Better Health Celebrates One Year in Benton Harbor
BENTON HARBOR, Mich., Nov. 2, 2021 – The Center for Better Health, located at 100 W. Main Street in Benton Harbor, is celebrating one year since the facility first opened. Initially established with funding from the Michigan Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities, the center’s continued service is supported by the Health Equity Endowment Fund established by Spectrum Health Lakeland in June 2020.
Since the center opened its doors on November 2, 2020, staff have assisted 1,031 total clients including 123 heart health visits, 746 mental health visits, 731 social navigation visits and 142 legal navigation visits. In celebration of the one-year anniversary, community members are invited to attend a Facebook Live event which will be broadcast to the Spectrum Health Lakeland Facebook page on Monday, November 15 at 12 p.m. During the event, viewers will hear from center staff and key community stakeholders while also learning more about free to low-cost services offered.
“We are grateful for the community partnership, trust, and support that have made the facility a success over the past year,” said Lynn Todman, PhD, vice president of health equity, Spectrum Health. “We look forward to continuing our work to narrow racial health inequities by providing care and support close to where people live and strengthening the relationship between Spectrum Health Lakeland and the Benton Harbor community.”
Staff at the Center for Better Health are available to assist with employment opportunities, government benefits, legal navigation, mental health counseling, social service navigation, and health coaching, among other services. Health screenings and immunizations are available including flu shots, COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots, blood pressure readings, virtual mental wellness visits, cholesterol and blood sugar checks. Area residents can also obtain free personal protective equipment including masks, hand sanitizer, and soap.
