Compassionate care honored with DAISY and BEE Awards

Corewell Health Greenville Hospital team members recognized by patients.

Katie Merritt, RN

Greenville, Mich., January 19, 2023 – Two caregivers at Corewell Health™ Greenville Hospital, formerly Spectrum Health United Hospital, were recognized for compassionate care and nursing excellence at a DAISY and BEE Awards ceremony January 18 at the hospital.

Katie Merritt, RN, who works in the Greenville Hospital obstetrics department, was honored with a DAISY Award after being nominated by a sister of a recent patient.

“My sister came in to be induced with her first pregnancy,” the nomination read. “My sister was very nervous, and Katie was very sweet to her. She was always quick to respond when we would call for her. Katie never made us feel like our questions were silly and always made sure we understood her answers. I believe Katie went above and beyond when she came in at my request to show me how and where she was massaging my sister so I could do it and help out. Even though my sister was not Katie’s only patient, she always made us feel like we were. She definitely made our experience a hundred times better.

Wendy Leatherman, a respiratory therapist, received the BEE Award for the care she gave a recent patient to the hospital emergency department.

“We cannot thank the staff and Wendy enough for the amazing care our family member received when he was brought into the emergency room,” the nomination said. “He has a long road ahead of him, but thanks to the amazing care he received, he is taking baby steps to getting better.”

During the ceremony Leatherman was told the patient, who was transferred to the Corewell Health Meijer Heart Center, is now home and doing well.

The DAISY award program was adopted from The DAISY Award, an international program established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes family was deeply appreciative of the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created an award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.

Greenville and Kelsey Hospitals have expanded the recognition program to include the BEE award, open to all clinical and non-clinical employees, in addition to nurses.

Nominations are open for any Corewell Health employee who regularly goes above and beyond in creating a meaningful experience for patients. The awards are given based on nominations from patients, community members and colleagues.

Nomination forms can be found at any Corewell Health facility or submitted online at: https://www.onlineregistrationcenter.com/UHKHDaisyAwards
