Compassionate care honored with DAISY and BEE Awards

Corewell Health team members recognized by patients.

Micki Doherty, RN

BIG RAPIDS & REED CITY, Mich., February 17, 2023 – Two caregivers at Corewell Health™ Big Rapids and Reed City hospitals, the new names for Spectrum Health Big Rapids and Reed City hospitals, were recognized for compassionate care and nursing excellence at recent DAISY and BEE Awards ceremonies.

Micki Doherty, RN, who works in the Reed City Hospital inpatient department, was honored with a DAISY Award after being nominated by a recent patient.

“I was here in a lot of pain,” the nomination read. “As I got back into bed and started crying from pain, Micki held my hand and comforted me. She felt like the mom I needed when my own couldn’t be here. Her bedside manner is so nurturing. She was so patient with every request and complaint. I never felt like ‘just another patient’ and I never felt rushed. In a delicate time, her presence was calming and reassuring. Every nurse could learn a little something about patient care from Micki.”

Megan Willson, a medical assistant at Big Rapids Family Medicine, received the BEE Award for the help she gave a family member of recent patients.

“I recently needed to reach out to the doctor’s office for both my husband and my father-in-law on the same day,” the nomination read. “It all seemed a bit overwhelming trying to get through the phone que and portal when you are not the actual patient and doing this while at work myself. When I did get through, I reached a friendly voice. Megan was so patient with me while I explained these situations. I appreciated her demeanor, kindness and poise. Megan definitely made a difference in our care experience.”

The DAISY award program was adopted from The DAISY Award, an international program established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes family was deeply appreciative of the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created an award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.

Big Rapids and Reed City hospitals have expanded the recognition program to include the BEE award, open to all clinical and non-clinical employees, in addition to nurses.

Nominations are open for any Corewell Health employee who regularly goes above and beyond in creating a meaningful experience for patients. The awards are given based on nominations from patients, community members and colleagues.

Nomination forms can be found at any Corewell Health facility or submitted online at: https://www.onlineregistrationcenter.com/brrcdaisybee.
