Corewell Health™ Cuts Ribbon on Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Facility

Focus of the facility is provide to short term, goal-oriented rehabilitation with the purpose of returning home

December 7, 2022

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Dec 7, 2022 – Corewell Health, formerly Spectrum Health, today is cutting the ribbon on an 82,000 square foot, 80-bed, 15-acre, sub-acute rehabilitation (SAR) facility at 1001 Leffingwell Ave NE in Grand Rapids.

Corewell Health-Rehab and Nursing Center Leffingwell will provide short term, goal-oriented rehabilitation to individuals after surgery, serious injury or illness. Subacute rehabilitation is time limited with the purpose of improving function and discharging the patient home. Recovery will be enhanced by a natural setting with wetlands that provide comfortable, appealing and healing spaces. Occupancy of the SAR facility is expected to begin in early 2023.

“The new sub-acute rehabilitation facility is specifically designed for the needs of our patients and is set in an environment designed to promote peaceful recovery,” said Chad Tuttle, senior vice president, hospital operations and post-acute care, Corewell Health West. “Well-designed, smaller facilities provide us with a modern environment for both rehabilitation and long-term care.”

The facility will be complemented by a 125-bed facility primarily focused on long-term care which is scheduled to open in 2024. Corewell Health broke ground in August on nine acres at the corner of Fuller and Cedar Streets in Grand Rapids. The combination of these facilities enables Corewell Health to offer the community a full continuum of rehab and nursing care in spacious, state-of-the-art facilities specifically designed for that care.

Upon completion of both facilities, care will be fully transitioned from Spectrum Health Rehab and Nursing Center – Fuller Avenue, an award-winning facility that recently was named to Newsweek’s Best Nursing Homes of 2023 in Michigan.

As part of Corewell Health’s goal to make its facilities carbon neutral by 2040, Corewell Health West and CMS Energy are partnering to develop a 2.35-acre solar array on the Leffingwell property that will help power the SAR facility.
