Rehab and Nursing Kalamazoo Avenue and Fuller Avenue recognized by Newsweek as Best Nursing Homes of 2023 in Michigan

December 5, 2022

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Dec 5, 2022 – Corewell HealthTM, formerly Spectrum Health, Rehab and Nursing facilities at Kalamazoo Avenue and Fuller Avenue have been recognized as Newsweek Best Nursing Homes of 2023.

Rehab and Nursing Kalamazoo Avenue was recognized by Newsweek as #1 in the Best Nursing Homes of 2023 in Michigan; Rehab and Nursing Fuller Avenue was recognized as #14 in the state.

“The national recognition for these two facilities highlights the state-of-the-art comprehensive care and services provided to our patients and residents and the dedication of our staff who work to treat them like family,” said Karen Pakkala, president, Spectrum Health Continuing Care, vice president Rehabilitation Services. “I am proud to work with such tremendous colleagues who work to enrich the lives of every resident they touch.”

The 2023 ranking identifies the nation’s top 475 facilities and are awarded by state. Nursing homes in the 25 states with the highest number of facilities were included. The total number of awardees varies per state due to different numbers of total facilities. In general, the top 20 percent per state were awarded.

“Finding a nursing home for a loved one can be a difficult experience. The practical and financial issues are complex, and the emotional aspects can sometimes be overwhelming. The continuing threat of COVID-19 isn’t making any of that easier,” wrote Newsweek Global Editor in Chief Nancy Cooper in an editorial. “To try to make the process more manageable, Newsweek has once again partnered with respected global data research firm Statista to create our annual ranking of America’s Best Nursing Homes.”

Newsweek and Statista designed a rigorous methodology that provided a score for every evaluated nursing home based on four key indicators:

  • Performance Data: The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) provides monthly performance data for each nursing home according to health inspections, quality measures, and staffing.
  • Reputation Survey: In cooperation with Newsweek, Statista invited over 10,000 medical experts—including registered nurses, nursing home managers and administrators, nursing assistants, therapists and physicians—to complete an online survey that assessed nursing homes.
  • COVID-19 Response: Each nursing home’s response to the pandemic was evaluated according to its resident impact, facility capacity, staff and personnel, supplies and personal protective equipment, ventilator capacity and vaccination rates.
  • Accreditations: For the first time, nursing homes’ accreditations from the JCI (Joint Commission International) have been added to the scoring model (if applicable). Accreditations reflect a range of structural and/or quality requirement which are now relevant to the nursing homes rankings.
