Corewell Health Gerber Hospital Receives Level IV Trauma Re-certification

January 30, 2023

FREMONT, Mich., – Corewell Health™ Gerber Hospital, the new name for Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial, received re-certification as a Level IV Trauma Center. Receiving this designation means the emergency department is capable of providing advanced trauma life support prior to the transfer of patients to a higher-level trauma center. Under the Level IV designation, Gerber Hospital can provide evaluation, stabilization and diagnostic capabilities for injured patients.

According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, heart attack, stroke and traumatic injuries are leading causes of death in Michigan. Injuries such as these require a coordinated system of care to prioritize timely assessment and transport to the closest hospital delivering the appropriate care. In response, the state of Michigan enacted a trauma system to reduce incidences and improve health outcomes for injuries. The emergency team at Gerber Hospital has focused its process and training to meet the state’s requirements and provide this important level of care for its patients.

“Our emergency department team’s expertise and experience in providing this level of care to patients are paramount to receiving this designation,” said Drue Berry, emergency department nurse manager, Gerber Hospital. “This is a testament to their abilities and the quality of care this team provides.”

Gerber Hospital’s chief nursing officer, Nicholas Strait, said the Level Four designation benefits Newaygo County and surrounding areas.

“Our dedication to providing quality care to families in Newaygo County and surrounding areas is evidenced by this re-certification,” Strait said. “Because of this, we can say with confidence we are providing the best care possible for our trauma patients.”

State of Michigan reviewers cited several strengths during the re-certification process, including high-level involvement of Gerber Hospital’s trauma medical director and trauma program coordinator, access to radiology, including 24-hour CT availability, and the ability to quickly provide blood transfusions.

Gerber Hospital’s Level IV Trauma Center designation is valid for three years, at which time, the hospital will apply again for re-certification.
