Corewell Health hospitals in West Michigan Earn National Recognition for Patient Safety

The Leapfrog Group awards 4 Corewell Health hospitals ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade for fall 2023

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Nov.6, 2023 – Corewell HealthTM hospitals in Big Rapids, Greenville, Ludington and Zeeland earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade for fall 2023 from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog that sets standards for excellence in patient care.

This national distinction recognizes the achievements of the hospitals in protecting patients from preventable harm and error.

“Leapfrog Safety Grade is a high-level distinction that helps our communities have confidence that Corewell Health prioritizes safety, quality and experience for our patients,” said James Bonner, vice president of quality, safety and experience at Corewell Health West. “We are proud of this accomplishment and the many caregivers that contribute to our success.”

Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals – Niles Hospital, Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals – St. Joseph Hospital and Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe also earned an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for fall 2023.

“We are very proud to have seven Corewell Health hospitals receiving an ‘A’ Safety Grade and continue to look to Leapfrog to help us on our safety journey,” said James Moses, MD, chief of quality, safety and patient experience for Corewell Health. “That said, we continue to have more opportunity to ensure we get all our hospitals to ‘A’ when it comes to safety. We are looking forward to the work ahead that will get us there.”

The Leapfrog Group assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country twice annually. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 30 national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and information from other supplemental data sources. Taken together, those performance measures produce a single letter grade representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.
