Corewell Health’s Grand Rapids hospitals achieve Magnet® designation for the fourth consecutive time.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Aug. 24, 2023--Corewell Health’s Grand Rapids hospitals — Spectrum Health Butterworth, Blodgett and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital — have earned the prestigious Magnet® designation for exceptional nursing for the fourth consecutive time.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program is the highest international distinction a health care organization can receive for nursing excellence and outstanding patient care. Magnet hospitals are designated for four years.

“Within the designation review, the Commission on Magnet noted a remarkable four “exemplars” of excellence within Corewell Health’s Grand Rapids hospitals,” said Shawn Ulreich, DSc, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, chief nurse executive and senior vice president, clinical operations. “To give context, one exemplar is an extraordinary feat within the Magnet world. We were recognized for our high percentages of certified nurses organization-wide, particularly within Women and Infant Services, our high percentage of Bachelor of Science-prepared nurses and ambulatory outcomes for outcomes of care, far surpassing expected standards of performance.”

With this recognition, Corewell Health’s Grand Rapids hospitals become part of the fewer than 1% of hospitals nationwide to earn this number of designations.

To achieve Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff.

The process begins with the submission of an electronic application, followed by written documentation demonstrating qualitative and quantitative evidence regarding patient care and outcomes. If scores from the written documentation fall within a range of excellence, an on-site visit occurs to thoroughly assess the applicant. After this rigorous on-site review process, the Commission on Magnet reviews the completed appraisal report and votes to determine if Magnet recognition will be granted.

Earlier this year, Corewell Health’s Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and Corewell Health’s Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe also received Magnet designation.
