Spectrum Health Medical Group Hosts Free Seminar at Aquinas College

Early detection and a customized health plan can help men diagnosed with prostate cancer achieve more favorable outcomes.

Learn more as Spectrum Health Medical Group’s Doctor Dialogue series continues with “Prostate Health: A Custom Plan for Every Man” on Thursday, September 20, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Donnelly Center, Aquinas College, 157 Woodward Lane SE, Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids’ only fellowship-trained urologic oncologists, Brian Lane, MD, PhD, and Christopher Whelan, MD, will share new information on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening, other tests and treatment options suitable for individual needs.

Some of these treatment options include surgery (nerve-sparing robotic and radical prostatectomy, brachytherapy and IMRT, cryosurgery) and observation (active surveillance and watchful waiting). For advanced cancers, hormonal therapy combined with surgery or radiation can provide the best cancer control.

Dr. Lane, a board-certified urologist, earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan and completed a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Whelan, board-certified in urological surgery, earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University and completed a fellowship at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California.

The seminar is free and open to the public. Register online at shmg.org/doctordialogue or by phone at 616.267.2626 and select option 4. Refreshments will be provided.
