Local Company Creates Web-based Tool to Manage Asthma

Web-based Abriiz engages children, parents and doctors to manage chronic condition

Ideomed today announced it has created Abriiz, a new product to help children, parents and doctors manage pediatric asthma.

Ideomed is an independent corporation launched in 2010 by Spectrum Health Innovations (SHI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Spectrum Health. SHI, which creates products and services to improve patient experiences and outcomes, began with two initial ventures, Ideomed and SNV, LLC. Ideomed provides personalized health management solution products, and SNV, LLC develops medical devices and products.

“The goal of Spectrum Health Innovations is to create novel ways to positively impact the health care experience, outcomes and efficiencies. It allows us to explore and bring forward the innovative ideas of our entire team of health care providers,” said Kris White, president, Spectrum Health Innovations. “Innovation is often limited to products suitable for commercialization. We’re taking a different approach by exploring all opportunities to improve the health care experience. We influence health care when we change the way we deliver care in the hospital because it’s the right thing to do for a patient, or when we introduce new products that will be available broadly.”

Abriiz is a web-based health management platform to help children with asthma manage their condition. Ideomed is currently in a pilot phase for Abriiz. The platform includes a website for parents to monitor their child’s medication compliance. The site tracks asthma symptoms and indicators. Abriiz also includes a mobile application that prompts children to take medication and relays that information to the parental site. Over time, additional educational and incentive-based elements will be integrated into Abriiz. In the future, Abriiz will likely include an asthma inhaler device that provides additional levels of automated reminders, monitoring and control.

“The key to managing asthma is to follow a medication and monitoring routine,” said Keith Brophy, CEO, Ideomed. “Abriiz monitors medication use and provides better information for parents and physicians to track a child’s progress. We are seeking additional user feedback on a new set of features as we continue to refine the product.”

The pilot includes children ages 8 to 17 with a diagnosis of asthma, who take daily controller medication, have an iPad, iPod touch or iPhone, and whose parents have Internet access and are willing to provide feedback. Visit abriiz.com to learn more.
