National Study Names Spectrum Health Hospitals Among the Best Nationally

Several of Spectrum Health's hospitals have achieved some of Healthgrades® top honors, including America's 50 Best Hospitals, and America's 100 Best Hospitals for multiple specialties.

Healthgrades Study of Patient Outcomes Rates Nearly 4,500 Hospitals, Finds Grand Rapids Hospitals Among Best in Multiple Fields

Several of Spectrum Health’s hospitals have achieved some of Healthgrades® top honors, including America’s 50 Best Hospitals, and America’s 100 Best Hospitals for multiple specialties.

Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital and Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital were recognized among America’s 50 Best™ Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery for the second consecutive year. Moreover, they are included in America’s 100 Best™ Hospitals for Cardiac Care for the third year in a row and are recipients of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention for two years in a row.

In addition to recognition for cardiovascular care, the hospitals achieved America’s 100 Best™ Hospitals for General Surgery, Gastrointestinal Care, and Critical Care. Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital received 5 star ratings in treatment of pneumonia and sepsis, and Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville received 5 stars in treatment of pneumonia, bowel obstruction, and sepsis. Healthgrades evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions and identified the 50 and 100 best-performing hospitals across all conditions or procedures within these specialties.

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, and assessed hospital performance relative to each of 33 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5 star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3 star (not statistically different from expected), and 1 star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
