Orthopedic Oncology Surgery Now Available in West Michigan

Spectrum Health and Orthopedic Associates of Grand Rapids today announced the appointment of Michael P. Mott, M.D., as medical director of orthopaedic oncology, Spectrum Health and practicing physician with Orthopedic Associates of Grand Rapids.’Mott performs highly specialized surgery on patients with sarcoma – a type of cancer located in the bone or muscle.

“Dr. Mott adds a new dimension to cancer care in West Michigan,” said Matt Van Vranken, executive vice president, Spectrum Health and president, Spectrum Health Grand Rapids. “Sarcoma is an extremely rare form of cancer and one that should be treated by a highly trained specialist. Adding Dr. Mott to our team is instrumental as we continue to build one of the region’s leading cancer programs.”

Mott will see patients at his Orthopedic Associates of Grand Rapids office and perform surgery at Spectrum Health.

Mott is a former associate editor for Foot and Ankle International and is currently on the editorial board of the American Journal of Orthopedics. His published papers have focused on pediatric bone tumors, giant cell tumors, soft tissue sarcomas and surgical approaches to pelvic tumors. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, Mid-America Orthopedic Association and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, a subspecialty organization whose purpose is the advancement of the science of Orthopedic Oncology.

Mott earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan and completed his orthopaedic surgical residency at Wayne State University in Detroit. His two year fellowship in musculoskeletal tumor surgery/orthopaedic oncology was performed at the Harvard University affiliated program of Massachusetts General/Boston Children’s and Wayne State University.
