Red Out Events Promote and Support Women’s Heart Health

Fundraising is scheduled for February 11 at Ferris State University.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich., January 30, 2023 – February is bringing cold weather but warm hearts as Ferris State University again is emphasizing women’s heart health at Red Out events February 11 at three sporting events on campus.

The events support the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation unit at Corewell Health™, formerly Spectrum Health, Big Rapids Hospital in celebration of the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign.

FSU students from the Sports Communication class and Sports Careers Registered Student Organization will run the Red Out events at the women’s and men’s basketball games against Saginaw Valley State and the men’s hockey game against Bemidji State.

To raise awareness for women’s heart health, all spectators are encouraged to wear red. Ferris’s athletics teams will wear their red jerseys as well.

Healthy heart information will also be available. Heart disease causes one in every three deaths in women each year.

The games are Saturday, February 11 at Ewigleben Sports Complex in Big Rapids at the following times:

  • 1 p.m. Women’s Basketball
  • 3 p.m. Men’s Basketball
  • 6 p.m. Men’s Hockey

Fans can participate in silent auctions beginning an hour before each game that will include hockey sticks signed by Ferris players, a football national championship poster signed by players and head coach Tony Annese, basketballs signed by both men’s and women’s teams, a hockey jersey and various gift baskets and gift cards from local businesses.

Also, a “chuck-a-puck” event will run during the hockey game and “miracle minutes” will give fans at all games an opportunity to donate loose change. All proceeds support the Big Rapids Hospital cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation unit.

“We’re so appreciative of the sports communication and sports careers students for showcasing heart health,” said Beth Langenburg, chief operating officer at Big Rapids and Reed City Hospitals. “We’re also very thankful to everyone who supports these fundraising efforts that in turn supports our cardiopulmonary unit. This effort every year makes my heart happy.”

The Red Out events will close with a check presentation during the second intermission of the hockey game.
