Renucci Hospitality House celebrates 20 years of accommodating families of Spectrum Health patients

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., May 23, 2019 – This month, the Renucci Hospitality House marks 20 years of providing homelike and affordable accommodations for families whose loved ones are patients at Spectrum Health Butterworth, Blodgett or Helen DeVos Children’s hospitals.

Each month, approximately 320 families stay at the Renucci House, which is the largest hospitality house in Greater Grand Rapids and among the largest in the country.

“We are so pleased to have a comfortable, convenient and home-like setting to offer families who are often in the middle of a medical emergency,” said Renucci Hospitality House Supervisor Ingrid Chicas. “Additionally, we are grateful and overwhelmed by the ongoing community support. Five or six days every week, volunteers spend countless hours preparing complimentary meals for our guests.”

The Renucci House is located just steps from Butterworth Hospital, offering convenient visits with loved ones hospitalized there. Businesses, church groups and community organizations across West Michigan regularly volunteer at the house to serve meals, greet guests, bake, conduct tours or work in the on-site library.

The $1.6 lead donation for construction came from Peter and Patricia Renucci. The Renuccis believed in the importance of having family in close proximity when a loved one is ill or injured.

Here are a few Renucci Hospitality House statistics:

  • More than 53,000 families have stayed at the Renucci House since it opened in 1999.
  • Families pay an average of $45 per night. Private donations and support from the Spectrum Health Foundation also helps cover costs.
  • The shortest visits are one night. The longest one was 16 months.
  • When the 37 rooms are full, which is most of the time, a handful of local hotels provide reduced rates to patient families. The Renucci House also collaborates with Ronald McDonald House and Hope Lodge.
  • Volunteer groups prepare dinners for Renucci House families about 25 days each month.
