Spectrum Health Announces $24.5 Million Investment in its Rehab and Nursing Facility

Spectrum Health today announced a $24.5 million plan for new construction and renovations at its Rehab and Nursing Centers, located at 4118 Kalamazoo Avenue on Grand Rapids’ southeast side. The project is designed to improve the facilities and services for its patients as the aging population continues to grow in the coming years.

“This is a significant commitment to providing our patients with the best possible care and facilities,” said Marc Chircop, senior vice president, regional relationships, Spectrum Health Delivery System. “Spectrum Health has served the needs of our patients and families at our Kalamazoo facility since 1964. This expansion and renovation will positively impact both direct care and the overall patient experience, which is very exciting for everyone involved.”

The current building serves long-term resident patients. The last renovation at the facility was more than 20 years ago. The initial plans call for a new 116,800 square foot, two-story facility that will serve 165 inpatients. Part of the original building will be renovated for outpatient use.

“Our staff has been looking forward to expanding the facility and offering these improvements for a long time,” said Jeff Mislevy, president, Spectrum Health Continuing Care. “We know the need for this facility and these services will only grow as our population continues to age.”

Spectrum Health will submit a Certificate of Need (CON) with the state of Michigan this summer, seeking approval for the project.

Spectrum Health is one of only five subacute programs in the nation accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) in brain injury and stroke rehabilitation. The facility’s short term subacute unit cares for a variety of conditions, including brain injury (including emerging consciousness), joint replacements, stroke and orthopedic rehabilitation. This facility also provides long-term care services.

Spectrum Health is a not-for-profit health system, based in West Michigan, offering a full continuum of care through the Spectrum Health Hospital Group, which is comprised of 11 hospitals including Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital; 170 ambulatory and service sites; 1,080 employed physicians and advanced practice providers including members of the Spectrum Health Medical Group; and Priority Health, a 575,000-member health plan. Spectrum Health is West Michigan’s largest employer with 21,300 employees. The organization provided $250 million in community benefit during its 2013 fiscal year.
