Spectrum Health Announces Caregiver, Physician and Pet Therapy Volunteer of the Year Awards

Each year, Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital recognizes one caregiver and one physician who go above and beyond, who exemplify patient centered values and provide positive experiences for their patients. As a Planetree hospital, Reed City Hospital has adopted an approach to taking care of patients that go beyond the hospital’s high tech environment. The hospital also recognizes one pet therapy volunteer who is dedicated to healing, easing struggles and bringing great joy to the hospital’s elders, its patients and the community.

The Caregiver Award is given to a unique individual who exhibits daily behaviors of demystifying the patient experience and positively impacting staff morale. At an awards ceremony on May 9th, the 2011 award was given to Lyni Nowak who was nominated by a fellow staff member and described as “patient-centered, not afraid to try new things to create a better patient experience.” As nurse practitioner for infusion therapy, Lyni has been tireless in providing positive experiences for her patients. Her compassionate demeanor exemplifies the Planetree model and is a great example to her fellow staff members.

The Physician Champion Award recognizes a physician who champions the Planetree model of patient cente red care and whose actions demonstrate his commitment as a role model for other medical staff members.  Dr. William L. Scott was selected from this year’s nominees as this year’s Physician Champion and is described as being exceptionally hard-working and compassionate, always putting his patients first and never giving up hope. Dr. Scott is respected amongst his peers for his experience and expertise in the field of oncology, and is well-loved by the nurses and staff members who have the privilege of working closely with him.

Cody is a familiar sight at the Rehab and Nursing Center at Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital. Story after story was told during the award presentation about this lovely black canine and his uncanny sense to know just what a patient needs from him. To say he is loved by elders and staff alike is an understatement. This furry friend has become a permanent resident in the Rehab and Nursing Center and is a valued member of the hospital community.
