Spectrum Health Announces Key Leadership Positions

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., June, 27, 2017 – Spectrum Health is pleased to announce key leadership transitions for two respected leaders in the organization.

Darryl Elmouchi, MD, has accepted the position of president, Spectrum Health Medical Group, and Gwen Sandefur has accepted the position of president, Spectrum Health Hospital Group.

In his new role, Dr. Elmouchi will have responsibility for Spectrum Health Medical Group, which was formed in 2008. Today, the group is one of the largest multispecialty physician organizations in Michigan with more than 1,400 physicians and advanced practice providers. While serving in the president role, he will continue to practice medicine.

Dr. Elmouchi moves into this position from his role as chief medical officer, Spectrum Health Hospital Group. Prior to this role, he served as chief, division of cardiovascular medicine, Spectrum Health Medical Group, and chair, department of cardiovascular medicine, Spectrum Health Hospitals. He holds an appointment as assistant professor of medicine at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He has also served in other leadership and clinical roles with Spectrum Health, West Michigan Heart, University of Michigan Health System, and University of California, San Francisco.

 

Dr. Elmouchi earned a medical degree from University of Michigan Medical School, a master’s degree in business administration from University of Michigan Ross School of Business, a certificate in biostatistics from University of Michigan School of Public Health, and a bachelor’s

degree in history from University of California, Los Angeles. He completed his internship, residency and chief residency at University of California, San Francisco, and fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and cardiac electrophysiology at University of Michigan Health System.

In her new role as president, Spectrum Health Hospital Group, Sandefur will have responsibility for Spectrum Health’s 12 hospitals, ambulatory care sites and post-acute services.

Sandefur joined Spectrum Health in 2015 as chief operating officer for Spectrum Health Grand Rapids and in 2016 expanded her role to COO for Spectrum Health Hospital Group. Prior to joining Spectrum Health, Sandefur served as the executive vice president/chief operating officer, St. Mary’s Health, and president, St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville, Indiana, which is a member of Ascension Health. Before moving into hospital operations, her role focused on business development, outpatient operations and the rebuilding of St. Mary’s Medical Group. She has also served as senior vice president, strategic development and regional operations, St. Mary’s Health System/Seton Health Corporation, and she worked at St. Vincent Health, Indianapolis.

Sandefur earned her Master of Health Services Administration from University of Michigan and her Bachelor of Science in Public Health from Indiana University.
