January 3, 2022

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Jan. 4, 2022 – Spectrum Health is pleased to welcome one new incoming board member and a new board chair to the Spectrum Health System Board of Directors as three board members wrap up their terms of service. This transition occurred with the new year.

Those ending their terms include Steven C. Ender, PhD, emeritus president, Grand Rapids Community College, a board member since 2012; Daniel F. Hopp, JD, former SVP, corporate affairs and general counsel, Whirlpool Corporation, a board member since 2018; and M. Ashraf Mansour, MD, former vice president and academic chair, department of surgery, Michigan State University and division chief, vascular surgery, Spectrum Health, a board member since 2012.

“I am incredibly grateful for the leadership and service of these individuals, who have served Spectrum Health and our communities with passion and purpose in what has been and continues to be an extraordinarily challenging time,” said Spectrum Health President & CEO Tina Freese Decker. “During their terms, they oversaw significant growth and innovation as we worked to make health care and coverage more accessible, affordable, equitable and exceptional.”

Joining the board in 2022 is Angel W. Hernandez, MD, division chief, neurosciences at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and professor of pediatrics and human development at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

Dr. Hernandez also serves as medical director of the Jack H. Miller Magnetoencephalography Center at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. He received his MD from the Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, PR, and completed residencies in pediatrics at Michigan State University and child neurology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He also completed a fellowship in pediatric epilepsy at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Alongside these transitions, Robert W. Roth, president and CEO of RoMan Manufacturing, Inc., concludes his term as Spectrum Health System board chair and will continue to serve on the system board as past chair throughout 2022. He is succeeded by Sean P. Welsh, regional president, PNC Bank. Welsh joined the Spectrum Health System Board of Directors in 2015.

As Tina Freese Decker expressed, “Bob has been an exceptional chair for Spectrum Health, leading during the COVID-19 pandemic and the proposed integration with Beaumont Health. Prior to serving on the Spectrum Health System board, he chaired the Priority Health board. He brought a wealth of experience in understanding insurance and as a business owner to our boards. We thank him for his drive and vision to bring more affordable and high-quality health care to our communities. We also look forward to Sean Welsh’s leadership. Working with Sean over the past several years, he will be an outstanding chair as we continue to realize our mission and vision.”
