Spectrum Health Closing 1300 Michigan Drive-Through COVID-19 Testing Site

Staff collected nearly a half million tests at the site

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., July 27, 2022 – Spectrum Health is closing one of the first drive-through COVID-19 testing sites in Michigan after nearly a half million tests.

Dating back to the early days of the pandemic in March 2020, the property at 1300 Michigan Street, NE in Grand Rapids served as one of the first drive-through COVID-19 vaccination sites when vaccines became available.

“When I think of how quickly our teams came together to establish this site and others throughout Spectrum Health in the early days of the pandemic, I am filled with pride,” said Chad Tuttle, senior vice president, hospital and post-acute operations, BHSH Spectrum Health West Michigan. “It is yet another example of our staff working tirelessly and selflessly in the face of an overwhelming crisis.”

The final day of appointments at 1300 Michigan will be Friday, July 29. Providers will discontinue referring patients after that date. Beginning Monday, Aug. 1, the site will be dismantled, and the remaining medical and non-medical supplies will be distributed throughout Spectrum Health. All team members currently working at 1300 Michigan will be reassigned.

Testing and vaccinations are now widely available throughout the community, which was not the case when the site opened in March 2020. Testing options for people without symptoms now include local pharmacies such as Meijer, Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid, home testing and other testing locations in Michigan.

Persons with COVID-19 symptoms need to be evaluated by a provider, which can occur in-person or virtually, either through an E-Visit, via the patient’s Spectrum Health MyChart account or through an appointment with a primary care provider.

Those interested in scheduling a COVID-19 vaccine at a Spectrum Health location can do so with a  MyChart account or by calling. More information on vaccines and testing is located at: https://www.spectrumhealth.org/covid19

Drive-through testing and vaccine sites quickly became a common sight during the pandemic. Sites throughout Spectrum Health West Michigan conducted more than 740,000 tests. These include:

  • 1300 Michigan – Over 477,000 tests
  • Big Rapids Hospital – Over 58,000 tests
