Spectrum Health honored by International Hospital Federation

Work on goal setting and tracking receives a prestigious silver award

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., December 15, 2021 – The International Hospital Federation has recognized Spectrum Health West Michigan with a 2021 Dr. Kwang Tae Kim Grand Hospital Award for its Operational Deployment System (ODS) work, which focused on creating clear and synchronized plans and priorities and then tracking them to successfully drive improved operations at its hospitals and medical offices.

Spectrum Health launched ODS to align all team members with the health care system’s mission of improving health, inspiring hope and saving lives. Specifically, ODS aims to create focus, support team members, and align efforts to system goals. The results were greater efficiencies, improved quality and safety scores and higher satisfaction scores from team members.

“We set and prioritized goals at a high level and made sure they cascaded down so every team member knew what they were and how to achieve them,” said Chad Tuttle, senior vice president of hospital and post-acute operations for Spectrum Health West Michigan. “The level of coordination helped us move toward our goals and is resulting in long-term cultural transformation.”

For example, Spectrum Health’s Women’s Health team used the model to improve patient referrals and enrollment in the state’s Maternal Infant Health Program. For regional locations, they set a referral goal of 50% and reached 69%. The enrollment goal for Kent and Montcalm was 30% and hit 54%. Michigan averages less than 30% enrollment as a state.

IHF recognized over 40 hospital and health service providers across the globe in six categories. Only three hospitals in the U.S. were recognized at the awards ceremony in Barcelona, Spain last month. Spectrum Health was recognized with a silver award. The gold in the Dr Kwan Tae Kim Grand Hospital Award went to Saudi German Hospital in Cairo, Egypt.

The International Hospital Federation’s Dr. Kwang Tae Kim Grand Hospital Award recognizes institutions that excel in several areas, including quality and patient safety, corporate social responsibility, healthcare leadership and management and supporting sustainability initiatives.
