Spectrum Health Names Charles Gibson VP of Medical Affairs
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., June 22, 2022 – Spectrum Health West Michigan is pleased to announce that Charles J. Gibson, MD, FACS, has been named vice president, medical affairs, Grand Rapids.
Gibson, who joined Spectrum Health West Michigan in 2016, is an acute care surgeon and recent past chair of the Spectrum Health Grand Rapids department of surgery. He also has served as medical director of surgical critical care and is part of the core faculty of the Spectrum Health General Surgery Residency Program and the Spectrum Health Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.
“Over the last six years, Dr. Gibson has demonstrated he is an excellent surgeon with a zeal for safe, accountable and high-quality care. His work throughout the pandemic, specifically related to surgery deferrals, showed that he is also an astute and inspirational leader,” said Josh Kooistra, DO, SVP, chief medical officer, hospital care, Spectrum Health West Michigan.
As the pandemic raged, Gibson worked successfully to continue critical surgical services throughout Spectrum Health West Michigan, evaluating every surgical procedure with the goal of keeping delays to a minimum for patients in the most dire of circumstances. Additionally, Gibson is an outspoken champion for health equity. He has partnered with health system leaders to address health disparities and institutional racism.
“Strong physician leadership plays an integral role in the strength and accountability of any excellent health care system. I take great pride in both my clinical and administrative roles and am humbled by the opportunity to serve our system and community in this capacity. I look forward to tackling the current and future challenges that Spectrum Health faces,” Gibson said.
A native of Atlanta, Ga., Gibson earned his medical degree from University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency and surgical critical care fellowship through Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners in affiliation with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.
