Spectrum Health Names MacKeigan Chief Medical Officer

John MacKeigan, MD, FRCSC, FACS, FASCRS, has been named executive vice president and chief medical officer for Spectrum Health system. He began his duties September 14.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Dr. MacKeigan’s stature heading our medical affairs,” said Richard C. Breon, President and CEO, Spectrum Health. “He has more than 30 years of experience as a member of Spectrum Health’s medical staff, as a highly respected surgeon and as a physician leader.”

Dr. MacKeigan most recently was chair of the board and chief medical officer for mmpc. He has held many leadership roles locally, regionally and nationally. Dr. MacKeigan is past president of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, a previous American Medical Association delegate, and past president of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He was associate clinical professor of surgery at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

Dr. MacKeigan has served as Chair of the Michigan State Medical Society Board of Directors for three years. He has chaired the Physician Holding Company and served on the Group Insurance Trust. He has been President of the Michigan State Medical Society (2004-2005). In 2007, he received the Presidential Award for service from the Michigan State Medical Society and he was inducted into the Grand Rapids Medical Hall of Fame in 2005.

Dr. MacKeigan completed his medical degree and a general surgery residency at Dalhousie University Medical School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He completed a colon and rectal surgery residency in Grand Rapids.  He currently is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Midwest Surgical Society and the Kent County Medical Society. He also is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
