Spectrum Health Reed City Diagnostic Imaging Department Earns ACR Accreditation

American College of Radiology Recognizes Excellence

Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in stereotactic breast biopsy as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR practice guidelines and technical standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed.

Stereotactic breast biopsies are used when patients with a suspicious finding  require further studies of the area.  A breast biopsy is performed to remove cells – either surgically or through a less invasive procedure involving a hollow needle – from an area in the breast suspected to be cancerous.  Using a specialized stereotactic breast biopsy system, Thomas Campana, MD, FACS, general surgeon, performs breast biopsies using minimally invasive techniques.  Dr. Campana is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology as well as the American Society of Breast Surgeons.  Digital mammography complements the stereotactic equipment, making images of a tumor site more visible and accessible to Dr. Campana while performing the biopsy.

Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital offers 24 hour emergency care, inpatient and outpatient services including lab and diagnostic imaging, a regional cancer treatment center, three primary care locations and an Eden Care award winning 54-bed rehab and nursing facility.
