Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital Recognized with an “A” for Safety

ZEELAND, Mich., April 29, 2021

Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital was awarded an “A” in the spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a  national distinction recognizing the hospital’s achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care.

This is the 10th consecutive “A” grade for Zeeland Community Hospital dating back to 2016. In addition receiving an A, Zeeland Community Hospital was cited with Leapfrog’s “Straight As” honor for earning at least five consecutive As.

“The Leapfrog Grade A is an outstanding accomplishment in any typical year,” said Joe Klesney, interim President and chief operating officer, Zeeland Community Hospital. “In a year when we are experiencing a global pandemic, this honor reflects the team’s relentless work to maintain a culture of safety. By proactively embedding safety behaviors in every aspect of care, our exceptional team has successfully continued providing the safest care possible during this challenging year.”

Zeeland Community Hospital was one of three Spectrum Health West Michigan hospitals that were awarded “A” grades this spring by Leapfrog. Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital and Spectrum Health United Hospital were also recognized for providing safer care.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to all general hospitals across the country and is updated every six months. It is based on a hospital’s performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.

“Your team has demonstrated a continued commitment to patient safety and the reduction of avoidable harm, despite these unprecedented challenges,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Your entire faculty and staff should be proud of this achievement.”

Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
