Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital Recognized with an ‘A’ for Safety

ZEELAND, Mich., November 10, 2021 – Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital was awarded an ‘A’ in the fall 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Gradea national distinction recognizing the hospital’s achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care.

This is the 11th consecutive “A” grade for Zeeland Community Hospital dating back to 2016.

“Receiving an “A” grade for 11 straight periods demonstrates our team’s commitment to continuous improvement in all aspects of safety and quality,” said Bill Hoefer, southwest regional market leader and president, Zeeland Community Hospital. “We could not achieve such an important accomplishment without the diligence of every member of our care team. Their dedication truly embodies the ‘safety first’ mindset of our culture, providing the safest environment possible to our patients, visitors and team members.”

Zeeland Community Hospital was one of three Spectrum Health West Michigan hospitals that were awarded “A” grades this spring by Leapfrog. Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital and Spectrum Health United Hospital were also recognized for providing safer care.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to all general hospitals across the country and is updated every six months. It is based on a hospital’s performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.

“An ‘A’ safety grade is a tremendous achievement, of which this community should be extremely proud,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I thank the leadership and workforce of Zeeland Community Hospital for its commitment to prioritizing patients and their safety, especially during these trying times.”

Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
