The Arrival of Spring Marks Resurgence of Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital’s $1.3 Million Exterior Renovation

Spring has arrived in northern Michigan, and with it has come the next phase of Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital’s $1.3 million exterior renovation project. Spectrum Health is continuing to make a significant investment in Reed City Hospital, with the completion of the first phase of construction in November 2009. As warmer weather approaches, construction will begin anew on April 1st, with the next phase focusing on the facility’s parking lot, covered walkways and landscaping.

As with many of the structures in the Reed City area, the original hospital building dates back to the mid 1970’s. While many significant improvements had been made to its interior in recent years, the outside had not yet reflected the substantial updates that had taken place inside.  With the new exterior renovation project, that is all changing. Most recently, the construction of a large, drive-through canopy entrance in November 2009 provides patients and visitors easy access to the physician practice building, with convenient drop-off and pick-up of patients.

During the upcoming phase of the renovation project, work will begin on the resurfacing and redirection of parking areas and new pedestrian walkways will be constructed. There will be limited disruption to portions of the main parking lot, however visitors to the hospital can expect to see clear signage, directing them where to park and where they can access the building. The parking lot will continue to be well lit and staffed with security personnel and parking lot attendants. Covered golf carts will be on hand to shuttle patients and visitors to the hospital’s entrances, with volunteers available inside each entrance to offer assistance with directions and locations.

The expected completion of the new façade and parking lot by the end of June will do much more than just change the look of the local Reed City hospital. All of the renovations and improvements have been designed to meet the needs of patients, their families and visitors. These improvements have been specifically designed to focus on patient comfort while entering and leaving the Reed City facility. Providing an attractive, landscaped parking area and convenient access is consistent with the hospital’s intention to offer quality care by creating a warm, welcoming environment to patients and visitors alike.

Upcoming phases of the renovation project at Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital will include the addition of a separate driveway for ambulances and MRI equipment and installation of radiant heated walkways for patient comfort as well as assisting to keep sidewalks clear of ice and snow.

“Our hospital and its services continue to grow and with the increase in outpatient as well as inpatient services, we recognize the need to continually invest in our facilities” states Sam Daugherty, president of Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital.

The hospital expects the completion of the renovation to further implement the Planetree model of patient-centered care and service excellence by providing easy, comfortable access to vital health care resources and emergency services for local patients and their families. With this latest project, Spectrum Health continues to follow through on their commitment to provide quality health care services to Reed City and the surrounding areas.
