The Need for Blood Never Takes a Vacation

Did you know that donations of blood often slow down during the summer months when people are busy with vacations and outdoor activities? Giving blood just isn’t at the top of our “things to do” list, and yet the need for blood often increases, especially due to motorcycle and traffic accidents, some of which leave their victims with severe injuries requiring multiple units of blood. The need for blood never takes a vacation.

Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital recognizes this increased need and will be offering two opportunities to donate blood on Tuesday, June 28th. The Michigan Blood Bus will be in Reed City at Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital, 300 North Patterson Road from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then in Evart at Spectrum Health Evart Family Practice Clinic, 5991 S. 95th Avenue from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

With decreased donations and increased need, we’re asking you to consider donating this month. If it’s your first time and you’re not sure if you are able to give blood, go ahead and make an appointment – or just stop by and we’ll walk you through the registration and screening process. If you’re willing and able to donate, we’ll collect your blood and give you some refreshments before sending you on your way with a big “Thank You!” And if you’re an experienced donor, please consider donating again this month.

Any healthy person 16 years of age with written consent from a parent or older who weighs 110 lbs. or more may be eligible to give blood every 56 days. Please bring photo ID or two pieces of non-photo ID with you. Walk in appointments are available or you may call 231.832.4090 if you prefer to make an appointment. For additional information, visit http://www.miblood.org/. The entire donation process takes about 45-60 minutes with only about 10 minutes needed to collect your blood.

Our community relies on the generosity of volunteer blood donors. Please don’t wait -give the gift of life this month!
